How My Love For Filmmaking Started

Image
This is the absolutely true story on how Colton Leach Films came to be! This was originally a video, but I took it down because it got a copyright strike (I'm not always careful with that unfortunately). It all goes back to 2008, my third grade year, I had enjoyed watching behind-the-scenes featurettes on DVDs for years. I actually didn't go to the movie theater very often, I watched older movies on DVD and Blu-Ray a lot. I enjoyed watching Lego stop-motion animated films, I was a member of the Lego club and the Lego Club uploaded an interview with a man named "David Pagano" who made Lego short films, that's what inspired me to be an animator. That same year, I got a desktop computer and I discovered something that changed my life forever; Windows Movie Maker, it was revolutionary for me because I could make whatever I wanted, almost everyday I made films with it especially with a camcorder my mom bought for me! But I didn't make actually good films until I ...

Film Lesson #4: Digital Versus Practical

In film, Special Effects, Puppets and Sets can be made-from-scratch or generated from a computer. The difference between them is made-from-scratch is self-explanatory, computer-generated takes a turn and helps make it even "better", or does it? Because sometimes CGI doesn't really look like it's there sometimes, somethings practical often seems more authentic, though it can come off as hammy. An example of practical effects is the Godzilla movies where it was always a man in a costume on set that looked like an aerial shot. An example of digital effects is Tron where the actors weren't really standing on the bikes because they weren't made physically.

Film Lesson #3: Sound Effects

Sound Effects are what give people the vibe that something is really making a sound. Sound effects are often made from scratch using everyday objects, this is called "Foley art", named after the man who started it. That's what I do for my flicks as an indie filmmaker. This video from Insider will show you what I'm talking about.

Places I've Been To Where Movies Were Filmed

My mom and I love to travel, and these are the top #5 places we've been to where movies were filmed. #5. Chippewa Square in Savannah, Georgia (Forrest Gump) I've never actually seen Forrest Gump, but one time on our way to Florida, we ate at Lady and Son's in Savannah and as we were leaving mom saw a park and said it was where Forrest Gump sat. #4. Chicago, Illinois (Child's Play, Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off) I love the first two Child's Play movies, Chicago is a place tons of movies from the '80s were filmed and it's  been a blast for me even though I've only been very few times in my life, I even went for the Blue Man Group concert one year. #3. New York, New York (Ghostbusters, Elf, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) I've only been to New York twice in my life, but Ghostbusters, Elf and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were my favorite films growing up, so I'm counting this one #2. SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida (Jaws 3D) It's been ...
